THE EAST COAST TRAIL - Newfoundland & Labrador

The East Coast Trail takes you along the scenic
shores of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, for a majestic
hiking experience past deep fjords, high headlands, sea stacks and towering cliffs.
The trail passes many historic buildings - from historic lighthouses and shipwrecks,
to internationally recognized landmarks like Signal Hill, Cape Spear, the Lord
Baltimore's Ferryland plantation and the French fort at Placentia.
The Avalon Peninsula contains an astounding variety of plants and animal, due
in part to its geographic location - where a colder Arctic environment converges
with a warmer ecological zone. Some of the visible plants include bake apples,
Arctic cotton, and some of the animals that can readily be seen include the bald
eagle, caribou and seals.
Use of the East Coast Trail was a part of daily life for generations of Avalon
residents, and was used extensively for hunting, foraging and travel between
communities and joins important areas of Irish and French settlements in Newfoundland,
with the D’Iberville portion of the trail following the historic overland trek by
a French officer of the same name.
